3-D Secure 2.0 & Data: A Better Experience

While it’s been relatively important in the past, the consumer experience is quickly becoming one of the top concerns for merchants in today’s digital world. Today, more than ever before, consumers are transacting on computers and mobile devices via browsers and apps, voice-activated personal assistants and various other devices.

When you combine the consistent growth of the digital channel and the consumer migration towards digital commerce with the limitless options for consumers, it’s easy to see why merchants are constantly optimizing the transaction experience for their consumers.

The recent migration to digital and these recent changes in the industry have also coincided with the release of the 3-D Secure (3DS) 2.0 specifications. This isn’t just a happy accident, either.

The initial 3-D Secure protocols weren’t built to support the technological innovation that we’ve seen over the last decade and, as a result, can’t functionally support transactions that originate from more recent inventions like a browser or an app on a mobile phone or a personal assistant.

3-D Secure friction frustration

Once consumers started experiencing friction-filled transactions with 3-D Secure on all these different devices, it became evident that change was necessary.

With 3DS 2.0, the key parties involved in the transaction, the merchant and the issuer, will have access to more, and better data, which will expedite the decision-making process during authentication. By utilizing hundreds of data points during the authentication process, issuers will be able to silently authenticate most consumers, meaning they will authenticate their transaction behind the scenes, without taking them out of the transaction flow.

Cardinal’s patented rules-based authentication solution, Cardinal Consumer Authentication (CCA), is an authentication tool that was built for this data-rich future. Through enhanced data-sharing, CCA can expedite the authentication experience while, at the same time, giving merchants the flexibility to adjust their rules over time, based on certain changes, as they see fit. With One Connection to Cardinal, we can Drive your Digital Commerce.
